The Story behind Valentine’s Day
The story behind Valentine’s Day is that St. Valentine gave his life in the name of love and romance. Marriage had been outlawed because Emperor Claudius believed that soldiers would be able to focus on victory instead of their families. St. Valentine continued to perform marriages secretly for Christians. Valentine also helped Christians escape from the Roman jails where they were being tortured. When it was discovered that Valentine was marrying people, he was also put in jail. It is said that Valentine fell in love with the jailer’s daughter who brought food to him. He wrote a letter to her and signed it “from your Valentine”. Valentine did end up being put to death because of his strong Christian beliefs. He died on February 14. He lived his life for others and gave up his life for them, too.
